Issues with in store activation fee

I recently purchased a phone at a store affiliated with boost mobile. During the purchase the store rep told me I would be charged an activation fee. I asked if I could do it myself. He said no. Next day I called boost cust service and asked the same question and I was told that I could activate it myself. I went back to the store and confronted the rep and wad told that in store activation was policy. I then called boost cust service back and asked to speak with a supervisor. The supervisor told me that it is boost policy for the store to activate and charge a fee. I would like to see the boost mobile policy that states that. I know that the contractors can institute their own policies regarding this but I want to know what the policy from boost states.

Hello, @BCalmeseSr.  Sprint is offering our Dealers the option to charge a device set-up fee to help improve the Dealers’ profitability and cash flow in a very competitive environment. This puts the Customer Fees charged by our Dealers at the same level as Customer Fees charged by the other Prepaid Carriers.

Keep in mind that most of our stores are independently owned and operated and might have their own sales policy. If you purchase a phone at www.boostmobile.com, you can activate it yourself and won't be charged for activation.

@BCalmeseSr. Boost Mobile don't require Dealers to charge customers a device set-up fee for activations or upgrades. The set-up fee is optional and used at the Dealer’s discretion.

Thank you for a response melissac. But as i stated in my post i know that they have their own policy as independent dealers but i want to know if there is policy that states that I have to pay an activation fee when purchasing a phone

I was put in this same position today when i purchased a new phone and was thinking the same as you that it was wrong of them to be so pushy and charge giving no other option. Not a happy customer and thinking some other service like straight talk would treat me better and i need to switch

I dont understand how they are nonrefundable. I had this same issue a week ago getting a new phone in store and I was told I couldn't activate it without paying a 77 dollar fee and then later finding out I could activate it myself for less then that....its a RIP off

I just went to a store nearby where I live in Newhall CA and the lady there didn't even mention the activation charge. I asked her how do I activate it and she told me she was doing it for me. I thought, "how nice!" Then she just charges me 25$ for the phone upgrade I just bought thinking that's just for the upgrade... I go home look at my balance and there's a sneaky little charge for $21.63 which i see (which actually was for the phone upgrade) but the sneaky charge was just the $25 and not mentioning the activation fee. Anyway I guess I am gullible enough not to know enough to ask before hand about an activation fee... I usually buy them online. During these times $25 is a lot of $$ for me right now when I could have activated it on my own. Shame on that girl!!

Hey Johndoesmith. That doesn’t sound right. Let’s take a closer look! Why would they want to charge you $70 activation fee?

I was trying to activate 2 new cheapo phones for my sons to play games on wifi. All of a sudden then activate your phone kept popping up. Local store manager of boost said i had to activate it there and i can do the cheap 10$ plan for each phone to get it to go away. I was not happy that was my only option, he told me that 20$ for both and i wouldnt have to pay next month if i chose to not keep service on these (ultimately) back up phones. A week passed by and i was able to finally come in, not only was it 10$ for each phone, but 25$ each activation fee? And guess what  THE PHONES STILL WOULDNT WORK, HAD TO CALL TECH SUPPORT. They fixed it and said all i had to do was remove the sim card. so i told tech support i never wanted them activated. She was confused at first but then understood. Said i paid cash so she couldnt refund it for me. I paid with my card, i have a statement from my bank. So now she tells me the activation fee is free to do over the phone yourself, noone gave me that option. So call my store back, he says he could credit back the 10$ service plans so 20$ each but nothing about the activstion fees. I just lost 60$ and around 3 weeks trying to get these phones working. I am more then upset, and i have boost for my personal cell phone. I think its time to spread the word and me and all my loved ones switch to u.s cellular or straight talk. Noone wants to take blame for this, so i have to, and i have to get robbed at the same time. Really really dissapointed boost mobile.

Wow i wish i would have read these experiances before i walked into the boost mobile store at 2740 stickney piont road in sarasota Florida!

What a scum bag this owner is! He fisrt tells me the stylo lg is no longer available and pushes this k51 phone on me saying its the new 2021 tech with more g's and such ..  Bull shit its 2020 Phone...Then he changes my service plan for 5 more dollars a month saying this gives me 5 gb... Not! I have the same speed ang g' s as i did before paying five dollars more a month!!!? And then he charges 25. Activation fee! Yet the real kick in the ass is i have to finish the set up myself at home because he is un able to compleate the task there after an hour! Now the best part is he charges me...199.00 for a phone thats on his boost store web site for 79.00 and sells me a case for it and says there 35. Yet for me its 29.  Lol 29. Is the retail price listed.... What a pal!!! I return the next day... I wait an hour as he works on scaming some othe poor soul and finally tell him he can credit my credit card the 120. Over charge on my card or i can just go thru my card company and dispute the whole charge! He finally shows me a price list he has with the phone listed at 99.00! Omg! Then he insist on giving me 100.00 cash instead of returning the money on my card! Well news flash scumb bag, ive orderd the LG stylo i wanted in the first place and will activate it myself, im going to dispute the charge on my credit card and mail him back his phone and case with a nice little note that says stickit ware the sun dont shine! Advice to boost / sprint maybe try veting the people u choose  to represent your product ... Because you just about lost a long time customer...
